Check out our hotel rooms, bathrooms and lounge to experience the delightful decor, complemented with modern facilities for a comfortable stay.

6 Bedded Room

We have three 6 bedded rooms (one a male, shared dormitory) which can also be booked at a reduced rate for smaller groups.

4 Bedded Rooms

We have two 4 bedded rooms (one a female, shared dormitory) which can also be booked at a reduced rate for smaller groups.

Single Rooms

We have one single room which are perfect for 1 to 2 guests.

Kitchen & Dining Room

The hostel has a well equipped self catering kitchen and a dining room (seats up to 28 people) which overlooks the Pennine Way path and South Tyne river.

The Lounge

Next door to the dining room is a comfortable lounge area with soft settees and plenty of books, board games and magazines where you can sit back and relax. There is a patio area overlooking the river and Pennine Way. Ideal in the summer to sit out and chill after a hard day’s hike or cycle.

Bathrooms & Showers

On the same floor there are 2 bathrooms. Each contains 2 toilets, 3 wash hand basins and a shower (with lots of hot water!) There are 2 further unisex ‘walk in’ shower rooms and a downstairs cloakroom with toilet & wash hand basin.

Opening Times

Alston Youth Hostel is open all year round (Some reduced hours during 1st Nov – 1st March).
If you can't find availability for when you would like to book, please do get in touch and we will try to accommodate where we can.

Check In - From 17:00pm

We appreciate that arrival times can be a little hard to predict. If you do arrive early, do try the doorbell, and if we can help by checking you in earlier, or giving you remote access to our secure storage for your kit, then we will.

Check Out - By 10:00am

We ask that you check out by 10:00 to allow the staff to clean the rooms and communal areas ready for the next guests. If you are staying multiple days, or need a later check out then do talk to us and we will accommodate if we can.

On departure day, if you would like to leave your car here for a while, this is usually okay - just chat to us and let us know.

For Exclusive Hire Weekend customers check in is from 4pm on day of arrival and check out at 10am on the day of departure.

Reception Opening Times

Our reception is open every day between the hours of 8:00am to 10:00am & 17:00pm to 21:00pm

Luggage & Transport

If you are having your bags carried by one of the luggage carrying companies e.g. Brigantes or Sherpa please let us know in advance when it is to be delivered to us so that we can try to be here to accept it from the driver or make arrangements for them to leave it in a secure place.

If you are doing the C2C and have a support vehicle that may arrive at the hostel prior to the participants again, please let us know in advance if they are likely to be here before 4pm.

Breakfast Menu

Breakfast is served at 7.30am or 8am (different times can be arranged for groups)

We serve a hearty, home cooked breakfast served at your table, with options for vegetarian, vegan and gluten free diets.
If you prefer to self cater, we have a very well equipped self catering kitchen. All our food is cooked fresh per person or group – not buffet style.

Evening Meals

Evening meals are served to your table at 7:00pm (different times can be arranged for groups)

We serve home cooked, hearty meals to your table. We ask that you order by 6pm (you can pre-order if you will arrive later than this) so we can prepare your meal.
If you prefer to self cater, we have a very well equipped self catering kitchen. All our food is cooked fresh per person or group – not buffet style.

"We had a fantastic stay here. Well equipped, super clean, quiet and an excellent view from the breakfast table for your yummy cooked breakfast (vegans also catered for). Mat couldn't have been more helpful and friendly. He gave us lots of recommendations on request of things to do and following his advice we had an amazing walk nearby. His angel fish in the living room were a major highlight for our party too. Would recommend this hostel to anyone wanting a comfortable stay in a stunningly beautiful place."

"Great stay at the Alston hostel. Going along the Pennine Way it has to be one of the most convenient locations as it's directly on the trail! A very warm welcome, and a quiet location. Great showers and good kitchen to prepare your own food. Good value breakfast as well."

"Stayed here for a night on my pennine way hike, it was brilliant. Lovely owner Linda who was very friendly and welcoming. Room and bathroom facilities were spotless. Breakfast in the morning was lovely and very reasonable. On the pennine way and a 2 min walk to lots of facilities in Alston. Highly recommend. Thank you I enjoyed my stay a lot."
